Start with a site-and-workload brief.

Facility planning goes wrong when the building and equipment are discussed separately.

A useful brief brings together the workloads, equipment and site. It identifies the people who own missing information and the decisions that cannot be made until it is available.

The design starts with the equipment, applications, operating model and site conditions rather than rack count alone.

Small data-centre setup

Start with a room that can be run properly.

A smaller setup still needs disciplined planning. Racks, power distribution, cooling, cable paths, networking, access control and service access must fit the way the environment will be used.

A smaller footprint changes the scale of the work. It does not remove the need to design it deliberately.

High-density GPU facilities

GPU-heavy infrastructure changes the planning conversation.

Dense compute can change the power and cooling assumptions that suit conventional server rooms. Equipment, utilisation, rack design, cable routes, network architecture and maintenance access should be considered together.

The website does not publish a standard density or cooling approach. Those values depend on the specific equipment and site.

Power, cooling and networking

These systems need to be planned as one environment.

Power availability, distribution, backup arrangements, thermal management and network paths are connected design decisions.

The project scope should state the assumptions, interfaces with site or utility providers, equipment boundaries and operating responsibilities after handover.

Installation and commissioning

Define what ready means before work begins.

Installation and commissioning can cover equipment placement, cabling, configuration, validation, documentation, handover and coordination with other parties.

The proposal should name the work included, customer or third-party dependencies, checks to be performed and the handover point.

Expansion and upgrades

Leave room for the next decision without overbuilding today.

Discuss plausible equipment additions, power and cooling headroom, network growth, access paths and the point at which another phase will be needed.

The aim is to avoid a design that cannot be extended when a real need arrives.
